Since antiquity, ambergris, now referred to as amber, has been one of the most valued perfume ingredients. Labeled an aphrodisiac with mystical powers, it is said that solid ambergris will retain its perfume for three centuries or more. References to this ingredient are found in Arabic perfume notes dating back to the early 9th century. Byzantine perfumers also used ambergris in perfumes sold in Constantinople in 895. Originally, true ambergris was found on the shores of the Indian Ocean or in oily lumps floating on top of the water. The original substance was excreted by sperm whales that had fed on large quantities of cuttlefish. When diluted in alcohol, ambergris becomes very fragrant. Today, true ambergris is rare and therefore hardly used, but the fragrant elements of amber can be found in other natural oils such as labdanum, a resin obtained from the Rock Rose shrub found on the shores of the Spanish Mediterranean. This ancient oil is also known as the Rose of Sharon, one of the twelve fragrance oils listed in Biblical scriptures.
