Frankincense has represented the pure spirit of giving for centuries. It is a symbol of divinity, unconditional love and pure blessings. The powerful mythical bird, the Phoenix, a symbol of feminine strength, was thought to build its funeral pyre out of frankincense and myrrh. Still burned today as a sacred incense, this treasured perfume material, also known as olibanum, crossed ancient cultures from India, Egypt, Arabia and Rome with records as early as 1500 BC. It was considered as valuable as gems or precious metals. Burned on alters from Persia, Babylon, Assyria and Rome, the white smoke produced by burning frankincense was considered to be a symbol for prayers and praises ascending to heaven. The Romans also considered it valuable in medicine where it was blended into a strong drink used to ease suffering. It was also thought to be an antidote for poison. In the Bible, Frankincense is mentioned 52 times. It was one of the gifts of the Magi, from the king of Ethiopia. Early Arabian perfumers used frankincense as a base for blending fragrances. Today frankincense is still widely used by many perfumers and the essential oil has been shown to be beneficial in skincare and aromatherapy.
